Bianca Fields

Born 1995 / US
Lives and works in Boston, MA / US

Fields creates paintings that survey and challenge the depiction of the 21st century Black female body in action. Re-examining and reflecting on beauty and identity, Fields’ manipulation of the image of the monkey recalls both pop cultural phenomena and vintage cartoons, alongside her very own likeness and realm of cultural experience.

Known for emotionally charged and confrontational figurative works, Fields creates bodies of paintings that navigate themes of love and aggression, psychological tension, and cycles of transformation. Utilising a candid mix of portrayed primates, Fields paints about her psychological space. The deliberate selection of these protagonists in Fields’ work contribute to the tension that holds her highly charged imagery together.

Drawing inspiration from literary sources including Moby Dick and archetypal texts like Women Who Run with the Wolves, Fields contrasts Western, masculine definitions of the sublime with an ancient femme approach to fearlessness, inner life, and embodiment. Fields’ paintings are rich with contradiction, tender and menacing, precise and chaotic, and place the viewer in ambiguous psychological landscapes where figures seem to drift between moments of eruption and reflection.

Stylistically informed by the raw romanticism of historical painting, the emotive shorthand of anime, and the feminist act of material refusal, Fields’ paintings are not just images but energetic fields. Fields’ characters, be they feminized beasts or solitary women, render vulnerability with razor-sharp urgency.
