Gareth McConnell
Milk and Honey
Gareth McConnell mostly produces work in series and their titles provide us with a map of mutualities; Survivors – Night Flowers – Family: A 21st Century Love Poem – Antisocial Behaviour – Portraits and Interiors of The Albert Bar – Community Meetings Rooms – the First Man to Remember my Name – Boxers – Meditations. The underwritten connection between the works is inevitably McConnell, and although he remains at a distance and out of the picture, there is a palpable intensity to his photographs. It speaks of a deep will to form a union and to commune with his universe, resulting in a constellation of sharply intimate moments, of subjects above and beyond the ordinary, places with powerful political histories, remarkably present persons, meditative silent spaces, and overlooked unconventional beauty.
Gareth McConnell (b 1972 Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland) graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1999. He was short-listed for the prestigious 2005 Recontres D’Arles Discovery Award and has participated in numerous exhibitions both in the UK and abroad. His recent monograph was the inaugural commission for a new series of publications selected by Photoworks and published by Photoworks/Steidl. He currently lives and works in London.
