Peter Peri
The Grey Point
‘The Grey Point has the double function of being both chaos and at the same time rhythm insofar as it dynamically jumps over itself.’
— Paul Klee Théorie de L’arte Moderne 1956
Peter Peri makes drawings and paintings. The subject matter of his drawings range from abstract forms reminiscent of Constructivist experiments to architectural details and the cult objects of Catholicism. They are created from a repetitive build-up of dense meandering lines, which are almost microscopic in scale. There is a rhythmic quality to the way the drawings are developed – a kind of inner logic that has the semblance of peristaltic movement. Though this process of infill appears to be highly ordered, there is a surplus of expenditure at play. This creates myriad irregularities and aberrations, and at times the finished forms are hardly contained by their boundaries and leak through their pre-drawn outlines.
If there is a cosmological dimension to Peri’s drawings, it is further developed in his paintings. Like his drawings they are made from an aggregate of smaller parts – in this instance the minuscule particles of spray paint. As a counterpoint to the drawings they have a free-form aesthetic and are rapidly composed. The geometric forms float in a haze of over-laid sprayed planes, in some cases emerging from a black abyss.
Peter Peri lives and works in London. He graduated from the Chelsea College of Art MA in 2003. He was selected for New Contemporaries 2003 and was a winner of the Red Mansion Prize 2003. The Grey Point is his first solo show.
