A Journey To Death

Tracey Emin’s A Journey To Death is a comprehensive solo exhibition of new prints, large-scale monotypes and bronze sculptures.

Made using a special printing technique developed by Emin, each monotype is created through directly painting printing ink onto a screen. Emin builds up the ink to produce an impasto surface that covers the whole screen. This screen is then moved onto the press and with a single pass of the squee- gee an image is transferred to the paper underneath. What is so bewitching about this printing process is the unforeseen changes that occur in the transformation of three-dimensional painted surface to a flat printed one.

In each of the monotypes, lithographs and sculptures present in the show, semblances of the artist become submerged in the representation of more universal expressions. Emotional, psychologically penetrating, haunting at times, Emin doesn’t flinch from her exploration of the deepest recesses of the human psyche.

“With mono screenprinting, I like the risk, I like the nerve wracking experience of never knowing how it’s going
to turn out till you lift the screen.”
– Tracey Emin
