Zona Maco 2026
Booth D104
Carl Freedman Gallery is pleased to participate in this year’s edition of Zona Maco – the leading art fair in Latin America. We’ll present new paintings by Billy Childish, Studio Lenca, Vanessa Raw and Lola Stong-Brett.
The presentation unfolds in dialogue with Vanessa Raw’s solo exhibition at Georgina Pounds Gallery, Mexico City. Raw’s symbolically layered paintings, depicting intimate female figures within lush and surreal landscapes set the tone for a booth concerned with the transformation of the body, memory embedded in landscape and the understanding of feminine experience.
Telling autobiographical stories through figuration, Studio Lenca narrates his migration from El Salvador, depicting his community using vibrant colours proudly wearing traditional hats – transcending borders and identities.
Lola Stong-Brett approaches this more abstractly, blending influences from her London upbringing, time by the sea in Margate, and a residency in Mexico City, incorporating folklore, tattoo art, cartoons, and her own poetry to create intimate, diary-like reflections on the ebbs and flows of daily life.
Similarly, Billy Childish draws from his surroundings and personal connections, portraying familiar landscapes such as birch forests and pastoral English scenes, as well as figures he knows, including self-portraits and depictions of his wife.
